Factory resetting your iPhone can be necessary for several reasons – whether you’re selling your device, troubleshooting persistent software issues, or just want a fresh start. A factory reset will erase all of your personal data, apps, and settings, returning the iPhone to its original “out-of-the-box” state. Here’s how to do it.

Things to Know Before Resetting

  • Backup your data: A factory reset will delete everything on your iPhone, so make sure to back up important files either via iCloud or iTunes (Finder on macOS Catalina and later).
  • Sign out of iCloud and Apple ID: Signing out ensures that the device isn’t linked to your Apple ID, making it easier to set up again or for the next owner.

Steps to Factory Reset an iPhone

  1. Back Up Your iPhone
    • iCloud Backup:
      • Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
      • Tap Back Up Now.
    • iTunes/Finder Backup:
      • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
      • Open iTunes (or Finder if on macOS Catalina or later).
      • Select your iPhone and click Back Up Now.
  2. Sign Out of iCloud and Apple ID
    • Go to Settings > [your name] at the top.
    • Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
    • Enter your Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPhone.
  3. Perform the Factory Reset
    • Open Settings on your iPhone.
    • Go to General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    • If prompted, enter your passcode.
    • Tap Erase iPhone to confirm.

Your iPhone will now restart and go through the factory reset process. Once complete, it will display the welcome screen, just like when it was brand new.

Alternative: Factory Reset Using iTunes/Finder

If you cannot access the iPhone through its settings, you can reset it via a computer:

  • For iTunes (Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier):
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    2. Open iTunes.
    3. Select your device and click Restore iPhone.
  • For Finder (macOS Catalina and later):
    1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
    2. Open Finder and select your iPhone.
    3. Click Restore iPhone.

After the Reset

After the reset, your iPhone will reboot to the initial setup screen, allowing you to either restore from a backup or set it up as a new device.

By following these steps, you can easily factory reset your iPhone, ensuring it’s ready for a fresh start or a new owner.

Note

Make sure to back up everything before proceeding, as a factory reset will remove all data permanently.
